Nearly 3,000 people, including women, have been arrested in Punjab province alone in connection with violent clashes between his supporters and security forces after the arrest of former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan on Tuesday. An arrest warrant was issued against him by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB). Punjab Inspector General of Police Dr. Usman Anwar told reporters that nearly 3,000 people have been arrested from across the province in connection with Tuesday’s violence, most of them from the provincial capital Lahore. He said that the miscreants damaged 14 government buildings in the province and set ablaze about 80 vehicles of law enforcement agencies during the protest. Anwar said that around 150 police personnel were injured in the incident.
He said that the arrested accused would be prosecuted under anti-terrorist sections. According to law enforcement agencies, 10 people have died in the violent clashes while PTI claims that 40 people have died during this period. PTI leader and former federal minister Murad Sayeed said in a video message, “At least 40 PTI workers have been killed and nearly 100 others injured during clashes across Pakistan.”
Police on Friday arrested several PTI leaders including former minister Dr. Shireen Mazri, Dr. Yasmin Rashid, Khusro Bakhtiar and Aijaz Chowdhary. Law enforcement agencies have already arrested the party’s top leadership Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Fawad Chaudhary, Asad Umar, Qasim Suri, Ali Muhammad Khan and Malika Bukhari. The army has been deployed to maintain law and order in Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan provinces after Khan’s supporters stormed the army headquarters in Rawalpindi.
