Bhopal Gas Tragedy: In the Bhopal gas tragedy case, the Center has got a big blow from the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court on Tuesday (March 14) dismissed the Centre’s plea seeking more compensation from Union Carbide for the 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy. The Bhopal gas tragedy is counted among the worst industrial accidents in the world. More than 3000 people were killed due to gas leak in Union Carbide Company.
The Center had filed a petition in the Supreme Court demanding that the case be reopened. The petition sought a direction to Union Carbide firms to pay an additional compensation of Rs 7,844 crore to the victims of the gas leak disaster. The government had argued that during the settlement in 1989, the actual damage caused to human lives and the environment could not be properly assessed.
