Big blow to England before Ashes 2023, another star player injured, doubtful to play!

New Delhi. The England cricket team preparing for the Ashes 2023 has suffered a setback. James Anderson is doubtful to play in the one-off Test against Ireland starting on 1 June. The veteran bowler suffered a groin injury during Lancashire’s most recent County Championship match against Somerset at Manchester’s Emirates Old Trafford. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed James Anderson’s injury in a statement and said the fast bowler’s recovery will be assessed ahead of the Ireland Test at Lord’s.

On Sunday, 14 May, the ECB revealed that James Anderson had suffered a minor groin strain while bowling on 11 May. Anderson impressed with 2/16 in a 14-over spell on the first day, but did not return to the game after feeling uncomfortable with a groin injury. He missed the remainder of the match. In this match, 19-year-old James Ray scored a brilliant double century and the match ended in a draw.

England has not yet announced the squad for the Ireland Test. However, keeping in mind the upcoming Ashes series, James Anderson is expected to be kept out of the team against Ireland. The Ashes series 2023 will begin in Birmingham from 16 June. Lancashire’s next county match is on 11 June, so Anderson will not have enough time to regain match fitness for the Ashes. Anderson, 40, is the best pace option for England against the Australia series. In such a situation, his possible absence will be a big blow for England.

Meanwhile, England’s second star pacer Joffra Archer is also struggling with his elbow injury. It is believed that he can also stay out in the Ashes 2023 series. Archer played only five matches for Mumbai Indians and left the ongoing Indian Premier League 2023. He has returned to England to focus on his recovery in order to make it into the squad for the Ashes.

Olly Stone is also out of the picture as he suffered a hamstring injury on 6 May while playing for Nottinghamshire. Captain Ben Stokes is also battling a knee injury. He suffered a toe injury while playing for Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2023. Stokes has played only two matches in this season of IPL. According to the team’s head coach Stephen Fleming, this all-rounder will be used only as a batting option for the remaining matches.
