British author and historian Patrick French passed away in London


French was the first Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences at the University of Ahmedabad in 2017 and has also been associated with Ashoka University. His mother-in-law and co-founder of Jaipur Literature Festival (JLF) Namita Gokhale told PTI that French passed away this morning.

New Delhi. VS Award-winning British author, historian and educationist Patrick French, author of Naipaul’s biography “The World Is What It Is” and “India: A Portrait”, died in London on Thursday after a four-year battle with cancer. He was 57 years old. French was the first Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences at the University of Ahmedabad in 2017 and has also been associated with Ashoka University. His mother-in-law and co-founder of Jaipur Literature Festival (JLF) Namita Gokhale told PTI that French passed away this morning.

Gokhale said, “It was very sudden. We are all very sad. Death occurred in London. He was suffering from cancer for the last four years.” French is survived by his wife Meru Gokhale and four children. Meru Gokhale was a former publisher at Penguin Press Group. Meru Gokhale said in London that he was an “extraordinary father, friend, husband, teacher and mentor.” She said in a statement: “This morning at 8.10am my dear husband Patrick French passed away in London after a long battle with cancer. His affection and love will always be with us. He left this world peacefully without any pain.

Former Congress president Rahul Gandhi, MP and author Shashi Tharoor, his party colleague Jairam Ramesh, historians William Dalrymple and Ramachandra Guha expressed condolences on his death. Gandhi condoled the death of French and said that his death was a great loss to the literary community. In a Facebook post, the former Congress president said, “Saddened to learn about the passing away of Patrick French – an eminent writer, historian and above all, a wonderful human being.
