Slovakia’s President Zuzana Caputova swore in a caretaker government on Monday to lead the country to elections in September amid a political crisis. The government has been formed with technical expert bureaucrats. Renowned economist Ludovit Odor, former deputy governor of the central bank, will head the 15-member cabinet. Diplomat Miroslav Vlachovsky has been made foreign minister, while former senior defense ministry official Martin Schlener has been given the post of defense minister. Odor, belonging to a minority community of Hungarian origin, is not associated with any political party.
No member of his government will contest the upcoming elections. Odor said, “We will not perform any miracles, but you can expect us to make the government work properly.” There is no proper government in Slovakia since 15 December. At that time, the coalition government led by Prime Minister Edugard Heger was unable to win a majority in the motion of no confidence brought in the parliament by the opposition. Before that there was a political crisis for several months. Caputova initially invited Heger to lead a caretaker government until early elections, but Heger resigned when four members of the caretaker government left their posts. Then Caputova decided to form a government of technocrats.
