Germany will provide Ukraine with additional military aid worth more than 2.7 billion euros ($3 billion), including tanks, anti-aircraft systems and ammunition. The German government announced this on Saturday. This announcement has been made by Germany at a time when preparations are being made for the first possible visit of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to Germany. Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said with the latest military package Germany wants to show it is “serious about supporting” Ukraine. He said that Germany would help Ukraine as much as possible. Zelensky is expected to visit Germany on Sunday.
However, it has not been officially confirmed yet. It is believed that Zelensky’s visit to Germany is a sign of improvement in relations between the two countries. Ukraine was apprehensive about Berlin’s cooperation in view of Germany’s dependence on Russian energy. Even the then German Chancellor Angela Merkel supported the Nord Stream gas pipeline. Merkel’s successor, Olaf Scholz, agreed to phase out dependence on Russian energy, but was initially hesitant about helping Ukraine with arms.
