The President of the Central American country of Honduras, Xiomara Castro, announced on Tuesday that her government wants to establish diplomatic relations with China. After this announcement by Castro, there is a possibility of breaking the relations of Honduras with Taiwan. After this decision of Honduras, only 13 countries will be left with Taiwan. China describes Taiwan as part of the ‘One China’ policy. Castro tweeted that he had instructed Foreign Minister Eduardo Riena to open talks with China.
Castro said during her campaign for the 2021 presidential election that she would focus on relations with China if she won the election. However, later his government retracted from his statements. In January 2022, the foreign minister told the Associated Press that Honduras would continue to deepen ties with Taiwan and that establishing diplomatic relations with China was not a priority for Castro.
Responding to Castro’s latest statement, Taiwan’s foreign ministry said it “expresses serious concern to the government of Honduras. Our country has made it clear to Honduras many times that Taiwan is an honest and reliable partner for its allies. Honduras is urged to think carefully and not fall into China’s trap or make any wrong decisions that harm the long-standing friendship between Taiwan and Honduras.
Taiwanese media reported that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has summoned Harold Burgos, Ambassador of Honduras. Burgos told reporters that he was currently waiting for orders from his government. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin told a daily news conference on Tuesday that Beijing welcomes Honduras’ statement. Wang said, “181 countries in the world have established diplomatic relations with China based on the one-China principle, this is a fact. This fully proves that establishing diplomatic relations with China is a correct choice in line with the general understanding of historical developments and China’s stand.
