Pakistan’s government has barred former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife as well as more than 600 leaders of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party and former public representatives from leaving the country. This information was given in media reports on Thursday. Khan was arrested on May 9 in a corruption case that had led to violent protests across the country. Since then, several top party leaders including PTI chief Khan are facing criminal cases.
Quoting Federal Investigation Authority (FIA) sources, Geo News has reported that the names of the PTI chief and other party leaders have been included in the list for their involvement in the May 9 violence and desecration of martyrs’ memorials. However, there is no official confirmation of the development from Khan’s party. Sources said the names have been included in the Provincial National Identity List (PNIL) of the FIA so that they cannot go abroad. Sources claimed that some PTI leaders and office-bearers tried to leave the country in the last three days.
However, they were stopped at the airports. The names of Murad Saeed, Malika Bukhari, Fawad Chaudhary, Hammad Azhar, Qasim Suri, Asad Qaiser, Yasmin Rashid and Miyan Aslam Iqbal are included in the list. Fawad Chaudhary has already left the party but his name has been included among those who cannot move out of Pakistan. Earlier, ‘Sama’ news channel had reported that the federal government had decided to include the names of 80 people, including Khan and his wife, in the no-fly list.
According to the channel, the names of PTI leaders have been put in the list on the recommendation of the concerned institutions. The report said that the Police Department, the National Accountability Bureau and the Anti-Corruption Bureau had requested the Home Ministry to include these names in the no-fly list. The no-fly list is maintained by the Ministry of Home Affairs and officials posted at airports and other exit points are given the names of people who are banned from leaving the country. When Khan was prime minister, the names of several high-profile people were included in the list, including Pakistan Muslim League-N leader and current prime minister Shehbaz Sharif.
