Prosecutors at the International Criminal Court (ICC) said on Thursday that judges have issued warrants against the four men following an investigation into alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity in Libya. The prosecutor of the ICC gave this information. Prosecutor Karim Khan also said that applications for two additional warrants have also been filed recently. He told the UN Security Council that he had applied to the court’s independent judges to process four new arrest warrants and would make a decision at “the appropriate time”.
Khan described the warrants as “an important but first step towards human rights and victims’ rights”. In February 2011, the Security Council unanimously referred the Libyan case to the ICC in The Hague, Netherlands, to launch an investigation into alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity. The matter was referred to the ICC following the brutal crackdown by Mohammad Gaddafi on protesters at the time. This rebellion later led to the capture and death of Gaddafi in October 2011, supported by NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation).
