Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai is being praised for her soft-spoken response to an adversarial question by American television host Jimmy Kimmel during the 95th Academy Awards ceremony. Twenty-five-year-old Yousafzai attended the glittering award ceremony as the producer of ‘Stranger at the Gate’. It was nominated for the ‘Documentary Short Film’ honour.

Yousafzai, a Pakistani social activist working for girl child education, was shot in the head by Taliban fighters in October 2012 and survived after prolonged treatment. During the ceremony, Kimmel approached Yousafzai and posed a question to a fan named ‘Joanne’. The question was about singer Harry Styles and Hollywood star Chris Pine’s ‘spit gate’ episode that took place at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival.

Kimmel asked Yousafzai, “Your work on human rights and women’s and girls’ education is inspiring.” As the youngest Nobel laureate in history, do you think Harry spit on Chris Pine? A visibly uncomfortable Yousafzai said, “I just talk about peace.” To which Kimmel said, “You know one thing? That is why you are Malala and there is no other Malala. That’s a great answer, Malala. Yousafzai shared a news clip about the incident on her Twitter handle. “Treat people with compassion,” he said. Kimmel has been criticized by many on social media.
