At least five people, including extremists linked to a banned Kurdish rebel group, were killed in a mysterious helicopter crash in northern Iraq. This information was given on Thursday in the statement of the head of the anti-terrorist organization and region run by the Iraqi Kurds. The anti-terrorist organization said in a statement posted on social media that an AS350 Eurocopter helicopter crashed on Wednesday night in the Chamanke district of Dohuk province in Iraq’s semi-autonomous Kurdish region. Lock Gufri, a spokesman for the head of the Kurdish region, Nechirvan Barzani, said at least five people aboard the helicopter had died.
“The ownership of the helicopter is being investigated by security officials,” he tweeted. An investigator at the crash site said at least seven people were on board. The statement said the helicopter was carrying extremists from the banned Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK. The incident remains a mystery, as so far no party has claimed ownership of the military helicopter. PKK spokesman Zagros Hiva said the group did not have a helicopter and the incident was being investigated.
