Mumbai: Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, Amjad Khan, Hema Malini, Sanjeev Kumar’s film ‘Sholay’ was released on 15 August 1975. ‘Sholay’ made records of earnings and all the actors of the film are still remembered by the names of their characters. On the same day and date another movie was released, named ‘Jai Santoshi Maa’ (Jai Santoshi Maa). This film gave a tremendous competition to ‘Sholay’ in earnings. Such was the faith in this film that many spectators used to enter the cinema hall taking off their slippers and carrying flowers and garlands. Friday is considered to be the day of Santoshi Mata, so let’s tell the faith of the people associated with this film.
‘I do your fast, accept it mother’.. ‘Main to aarti utaraon re Santoshi Mata ki’.. these songs in the voice of Usha Mangeshkar are heard even today on the occasion of worship. These songs are from ‘Jai Santoshi Maa’ only. Poet Pradeep has also sung two songs in this film. Whenever there is talk of low-budget bumper-grossing films, ‘Jai Santoshi Maa’ is remembered. Directed by Vijay Sharma, the film with a budget of 12-25 lakhs earned a lot of money. According to media reports, people from the village used to come in droves in bullock carts to watch the film and would go inside the cinema hall after taking off their slippers. On the other side, the actress used to perform aarti on the screen and on the other hand, the public used to worship by decorating their plates. During the show, people used to toss a lot of coins immersed in devotion, which the sweepers of the theaters became rich by seeing them.

After the film was over, prasad was distributed outside the theatres. It is said that there used to be a fair-like atmosphere, some shopkeepers outside the theaters had earned a lot by selling Santoshi Mata’s photo frames and Vratkatha books. On the other hand, some people had earned a lot by setting up a stall to keep shoes and slippers.
People considered actress Anita Guha as goddess
In fact, people started thinking of actress Anita Guha, who played the role of Santoshi Maa in the film, as a goddess. All logic fails in front of the flood of faith. It is said that people used to queue up outside his flat in Mumbai since morning to have darshan. When Anita came out, some used to seek blessings for their child and some used to lay their heads at her feet.
