Two days after Pakistan’s former prime minister Imran Khan was arrested by an anti-corruption agency on corruption charges, the Supreme Court on Thursday ordered his immediate release, terming his arrest as “illegal” and “illegal”. Imran Khan appeared in the Islamabad High Court on Friday amidst tight security arrangements. An anti-terrorism court granted him bail till May 23 in a case of inciting violence. Khan’s arrest triggered massive protests across Pakistan, with his supporters furious. Government buildings and establishments were destroyed, prompting the police to enforce prohibitory orders.

Nearly 2,000 people were arrested and at least eight killed, after which the government called in the military to help restore order. Meanwhile, thousands of Pakistanis will gather at Srinagar Highway G-13 Islamabad at 10 am today to express solidarity with PTI chief Imran Khan. After appearing in the Islamabad High Court, Imran Khan will also address the venue.

PTI chief gets bail till May 23 for inciting violence

An anti-terrorism court has granted bail to Imran Khan till May 23 in a case of inciting violence. The case was registered at Ramna police station. Two cases of terrorism were registered at Islamabad’s Ramna police station, one alleging that Imran had led a mob at the Federal Judicial Complex (FJC) and the other alleging the same in relation to the IHC. Two more cases of terrorism were registered against Imran by the Anti-Terrorism Department police station and Golara police station for allegedly assaulting the police and creating disturbance outside the court.
