Saudi Arabia frees American citizen who posted offensive tweet

Saudi Arabia has released an American citizen who posted objectionable tweets on Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. Saad Al Madi (72), a resident of Florida in the US, had posted some tweets criticizing Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, after which he was arrested and sent to jail. Saad Al Maadi’s son Ibrahim Al Maadi has informed about his father’s release. There was no immediate comment from Saudi or US officials on the release of Saad al-Madi.

But, the process for the release of Saad al-Madi had started since last one week. All charges against Saad al-Madi, who holds dual citizenship of Saudi Arabia and the United States, have been dropped. However, it is not yet clear how long the travel ban imposed against Saad will continue.

Saudi Arabia last year sentenced Saad al-Madi to 16 years in prison, saying his tweets critical of Saudi Arabia’s polity were considered acts of terrorism against the kingdom. US President Joe Biden visited Saudi Arabia last year in view of improving relations with Saudi Arabia. Saad’s sentence was increased to 19 years by a Saudi court.
