Captain Iva Zlotnica, a press officer at the Armed Forces’ Operations Command, told television broadcaster TVN24 that a search operation had been launched around Rypin. This includes a helicopter, a drone and a ground group of Territorial Defense Forces, he added.
Poland’s defense ministry said on Saturday it detected an object in the country’s airspace that flew in from the direction of Belarus, and it is likely a surveillance balloon. The ministry tweeted that radar contact with the object was lost near Rypin, a town in central Poland, 143 kilometers (89) northwest of the capital Warsaw. Captain Iva Zlotnica, a press officer at the Armed Forces’ Operations Command, told television broadcaster TVN24 that a search operation had been launched around Rypin. This includes a helicopter, a drone and a ground group of Territorial Defense Forces, he added.
Zlotnica said in a phone interview with the private TV station that the object was spotted around 8:30 p.m. local time on Friday near Bialowieza, which is near Poland’s border with Belarus. He said radar surveillance was carried out, but the object ceased to be visible at around 12:30 am on Saturday. The incident on Saturday followed two other known incursions into Polish airspace since Russia launched an offensive against Ukraine on Poland’s eastern border.
