The strategically important 434-km Srinagar-Leh National Highway was reopened for vehicular movement on Thursday in a record time of 68 days after it was closed following heavy snowfall in January this year. The officers provided this information. He informed that the movement of vehicles has been successfully tested. The highway was thrown open to traffic at Zojila Pass, situated at an altitude of 11,650 feet, by the Director General of the Border Roads Organization (BRO), Lt Gen Rajeev Chowdhary.
Zojila is a strategic pass that is an important link between the Kashmir Valley and Ladakh and is also important for the operational preparedness of the armed forces. It remained closed for about six months due to heavy snowfall. However, over the years, BRO is making sure to restore traffic on it again in less time. This year, it was cleared in a record time of 68 days. Talking to reporters, Lt Gen Chaudhary said that the opening of the pass is of great importance from the strategic point of view as well as from the socio-economic point of view. He said, “The connectivity of the people of Ladakh used to be lost for about five-six months, but the BRO is opening this route much earlier than the normal time, so that people can travel easily for their needs, medical emergencies, besides business activities.” From there you can go to Srinagar.
